ICMR Study Finds Covid-19 Antibodies in 72% Blood Samples
As per an ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) study, neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, which is the cause of Covid-19 were found in 72% of the samples. The study was conducted at ICMR’s National Institute of Virology in Pune from March to May. The study by Indian Council of Medical Research was published in IJMR (Indian Journal of Medical Research).
For the study, a total of 343 blood samples were collected. 89 positive, 58 negative for SARS-CoV-2, 17 cross-reactive, and 179 serum from healthy people were collected and tested.
Among 89 serum samples from SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR confirmed patients, 64 or 71.9% were found positive and 25 serum samples or 28.1% negative. 59 of the 89 COVID-19-positive patients were symptomatic and 30 asymptomatic. Out of the 59 symptomatic patients, 42 or 71.2% showed the presence of antibodies. Among 30 asymptomatic patients, 22 or 73.3% showed antibodies.
The collection of samples was done two weeks after RT-PCR confirmation from 58 Sars-Cov-2 RT-PCR-negative patients.
As per the study comprehending the response of neutralising antibody in the patients of Covid-19 is a vital requirement. The presence of neutralizing antibodies would provide greater assurance of protection in the lack of preventive and therapeutic options that are approved and validated. The role of cellular immune responses in the recovery of such patients is still to be explored.
