Mucormycosis, A New Covid-19 Symptom Surfaces
Researchers and scientists from all over the world are surprised with the vast range of different Covid-19 symptoms in different gender, age groups, and co-morbidities patients. Recently, doctors in Ahmedabad have reported a new Covid-19 symptom. The new coronavirus symptom is Black Fungus or Mucormycosis, a fungal infection in patients who have tested positive for Covid.
According to the report, Parth Rana, an Ahmedabad-based, retina and ocular trauma surgeon has claimed that five Covid-19 positive patients are suffering from mucormycosis.
Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have also said to witness more than 12 cases of Covid-19 triggered Mucormycosis fungus within 15 days. “The rate with which mucormycosis, triggered by Covid-19 is extremely alarming. Any clinical suspicion on symptoms like nose obstruction, black dry crusts in the nose, and swollen eyes or cheeks are a signal to start a biopsy and antifungal therapy as soon as possible.”, said Dr. Manish Munjal, Senior ENT Surgeon.
Black Fungus or Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection. With 50% as mortality rate, the infection is said to be caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes that exist in the environment. Individuals with health problems or those who take medicines, which reduce the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness usually become a victim to Mucormycosis. Moreover, specialist doctors suspect poor sugar control as well as use of high doses of steroids as possible reasons for the disease.
