Guide To COVID-19 Vaccination - All Questions Answered

India is currently witnessing the second wave of COVID-19 and the experts have already warned us for the third wave. Amid the unprecedented times, the government is taking steps to reduce the spread of the virus, one of them is conducting the vaccination drive. Since May 1, 2021, the vaccination drive has expanded, including the 18+ age group in the eligibility category for the COVID-19 vaccine.

But before getting the jab, you must go through some commonly asked questions to clear doubts if any, related to the COVID-19 vaccination.

1. Can I choose which vaccine to take?

Some states have allowed the citizens to choose between Covaxin and Covishield. However, there is no option to choose between the vaccines at the CoWin platform.

2. I took the first shot of Covishield. Can I take the second shot of Covaxin or vice versa?

No. Both the vaccines Covaxin and Covishield are based on different platforms. The former is an inactivated vaccine whereas the latter is based on a viral vector platform. To boost immunity, it is essential to take the same vaccine as the first one.

3. I was tested positive after taking the first jab of COVID-19 vaccine. When should I take the second dose of the vaccine? Will I be required to take the first jab again?

Before taking the next dose of COVID-19 vaccine, it is recommended to wait for at least 4 weeks after recovery from symptoms of the virus or isolation period. Also, if you have taken the first dose, then there is no need to take one again. You can simply get the second dose after the stated period of time.

4. Is there any particular diet that I should take between the first and second dose of COVID-19 vaccine shots?

No. There is no particular diet recommended taking between the first and second dose of COVID-19 vaccine shots.

5. Is it recommended for pregnant women to take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Studies have shown that pregnant women affected with COVID-19 are at a higher risk of illness in case they catch COVID-19. As they are more vulnerable, therefore, they need to take care of themselves the most during the pandemic. However, safety studies have not been done in pregnant women and lactating mothers yet. Therefore, the Ministry of Health of the Indian Government has not recommended COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women. But the clinical trials of pregnant women will be commenced soon.

But the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) believes that there are no such risks that would overpower the benefits of COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women and recommends pregnant and breastfeeding women to get vaccinated. Also, after having a one-on-one discussion, the health authorities of the UK and USA also recommend COVID-19 vaccines to pregnant women.

6. Should I still get vaccinated if I have already recovered from COVID-19?

Yes. Even if you have already recovered from COVID-19 infection, it is recommended for you to receive the complete schedule of COVID-19 vaccination. This is because getting vaccinated boosts your immunity.

7. Are there any major side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine?

Like any other vaccine, COVID-19 vaccines also show some mild side effects. These include fatigue, mild fever, muscle or joint pain, soreness in the arm, and headache. But this should not stop you from getting vaccinated. If you are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine, then you must book a slot and get the jab.

8. I have received both the shots of COVID-19 vaccine. Should I still wear a mask when going out?

Yes. COVID-19 vaccines do not confer absolute protection against the infection. So, you must wear a mask, follow social distancing practice, as well as proper hand hygiene even after getting vaccinated.

Conclusion

Vaccination is the most effective way of protecting yourself and the community from getting infected with COVID-19. It boosts your immune system by helping it to identify and fight against the virus. Hence, as soon as you are able to find a slot on the CoWin portal or Arogya Setu app, you must book one and get vaccinated.
