The National Capital Delhi has reported its first confirmed case of the South African variant of the novel coronavirus. The South African strain has been detected in a 33-year-old man, currently undergoing treatment at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital Hospital. The patient has been kept in isolation in a separate unit. According to a source, the man was asymptomatic initially, however, but his present condition is not yet known.
It must be noted that in the past, two individuals were found positive for UK strain of Covid-19 and had undergone treatment at the LNJP Hospital.
According to ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava, in India, the South African variant of coronavirus had been detected in four returnees – one from Tanzania, one from Angola, and two from South Africa in January. All the travellers as well as their contacts had been tested and quarantined. Recently, Ashwini Choubey, Minister of State for Health informed the Rajya Sabha about three new variants of the novel coronavirus - from the UK, South Africa and Brazil, have been reported so far in the country.
The South African variant of the coronavirus had emerged in mid-December and was first reported in mid-February in the country.
Furthermore, about a month ago, the Centre had stated that four people were detected with the South African variant of the novel coronavirus and one had tested positive for the Brazil variant for the first time in India.
Keeping the UK, South Africa and Brazil mutant variants of SARS-CoV-2 in mind, the government of India has revised its international travel guidelines to reduce the risk of importation and their spread in the country.
