Updated List of Rules for Traffic Violations And Fines in India

No matter which region you reside in India, there are certain rules and regulations that you must abide by while driving on Indian roads. . Violating these rules and regulations can lead to you being levied certain fines, so it is better to adhere to and follow all the traffic rules to avoid legal and financial consequences. These rules and regulations have been implemented for the safety of citizens and to reduce the number of road accidents. Thus, to help beginners as well as experienced riders, we have jotted down some of the rules to prevent traffic violations as well as fines imposed in case of violation.

List of Rules for Traffic Violations And Fines in India

The Motor Vehicles Amendment Act was implemented in September 2019 in order to ensure greater safety on roads. So, in order to stay away from legal consequences, you must follow the below-mentioned traffic laws in India otherwise a certain fine will be imposed on you. 

1. You Must Ride With A Valid Driving Licence

Just like bike insurance, having a valid driving licence while riding is mandatory for all. This is because a driving licence is one such document that grants you the right to ride on the road in a legal manner. Moreover, the fine for riding on Indian roads without a valid driving licence has also increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5000. Thus, it is better to have a valid driving licence than to pay fines for going against this rule. 

2. You Must Issue Valid Number Plate For Your Vehicle & Park It Rightly

The moment you have purchased a new two-wheeler, make sure to issue a number plate for it from your nearest Regional Transport Office or RTO. As per the amended law, it is illegal to drive on Indian roads without a valid number plate. Also, make sure to get your vehicle’s number plate changed in case you relocate your vehicle to another Indian state, else be prepared for paying fines. 

Furthermore, also make it a point to park your vehicle in the right parking space. If you fail to do so, not only will your two-wheeler be towed but you will also have to pay hefty fines as a result of parking the vehicle wrongly. Earlier, the fine for these violations was Rs. 100 for the first time and Rs. 300 in case you violated this rule for the second time. Now, for the first time, the fine is Rs. 500 and for the second time, it is Rs. 1500. 

3. You Must Not Indulge In Overspeeding & Rash Driving

Next, you also need to be careful about the speed at which you are riding your vehicle. This means that you should never increase the speed beyond a certain limit which can lead to accidents. Similarly, you should also stay away from driving rashly or in a manner that is dangerous for others. At present, the fine imposed for overspeeding is between Rs. 1000 - Rs. 4000 depending on the vehicle you are driving. On the other hand, the fine for rash driving for the first time is imprisonment of 6 months and a fine up to Rs. 5000 and for a second time, there is imprisonment of 2 years and a fine of Rs. 10,000. 

4. You Must Not Drive Under The Influence Of Alcohol & When Mentally Unfit

You must never drink and drive as doing so is one of the major causes of road accidents and thus a violation of this rule results in you being imposed with hefty fines. Before the amendment of the laws in 2019, the fine used to be Rs. 2000 and as of now, the fine for violation of this rule for the first time is Rs. 10,000 and an imprisonment of 6 months. In case you are found violating this rule for the second time, then there is an imprisonment of 2 years and a fine of Rs. 15,000. Also, note that there is also a fine imposed in case you are driving when you are mentally unstable and the fine is Rs. 2000. 

5. You Must Never Drive An Overloaded Vehicle

You should always stay away from driving an overloaded two-wheeler, otherwise be prepared for the legal consequences. Earlier there was no fine for violating this rule, but now to ensure greater road safety, a fine of Rs. 2000 is charged as a consequence of violating this rule. In addition to this fine, your driving licence will also stand invalid for a period of 3 months. 

6. You Should Never Ride A Vehicle While Using A Mobile Phone

Many times, we see people on the road who are using their mobile phones while driving or riding their vehicle as a result of which a number of accidents take place. So, to reduce such events, a fine of Rs. 5000 is levied.

7. You Must Always Ride With A Helmet

As a rule of thumb, you should always ride a two-wheeler when you are wearing a helmet. This is one of those traffic rules that are very important for one and all. A violation of this rule results in you paying a fine of Rs.1000 and your driving license will also be suspended for 3 months. 

8. You Should Always Make Way For Emergency Vehicles

While riding on the road, you must always make way for emergency vehicles like ambulances. Many a time, people fail to do so and thus with the amendment of the law in 2019, a fine of Rs. 10,000 is imposed in case you do not adhere to this rule. 

9. Never Let A Juvenile Ride Your Vehicle

You should never permit a juvenile to ride a two-wheeler otherwise as a guardian you will stand guilty for any mishaps. If a juvenile gets caught driving or breaking any traffic law, the guardian of that juvenile will be held guilty and will be imposed with a fine of Rs. 25,000 with an imprisonment of 3 years. 

10. You Should Not Use Horns In Silent Zones

In case you are found using the vehicle’s horn in silent zones, then you will be charged with a fine of Rs. 2000 for the first and Rs. 4000 for the second time. Earlier there was no such fine for violating this rule.
