At the time of two-wheeler renewal, Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate is one of the mandatory documents that confirms and approves the policy renewal. As per the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), it is now mandatory for the bike insurance companies to renew the two-wheeler insurance policy only after a valid PUC certificate has been provided by the owner.
What is Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate?
PUC Certificate of Pollution under Control Certificate acts as an approval document and contains the emission levels of your two-wheeler if they are within the pollution norms. The testing is done at the authorized emission testing centers that are usually located at the petrol pumps throughout India. The certificate is issued by the government after testing the emission levels of your two-wheeler and is required by the rider of the vehicle all the time. A PUC certificate contains details such as registration number of the two-wheeler, serial number of the PUCC, PUC test validity date, the date on which the emission test was done, and emission test reading of the two-wheeler.

Importance of PUC Certificate
Apart from getting your two-wheeler insured, a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate also helps you meet the legal obligations. This is because as per the Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, it is mandatory to carry a PUCC when riding a two-wheeler on the Indian roads. Also, as the owner of a two-wheeler, you are required to provide the pollution certificate at the time of two-wheeler insurance policy renewal. It was earlier directed by the SUpreme Court of India for the insurance companies that they will not insure a two-wheeler unless it has a valid PUC Certificate at the time of policy renewal.

How to Get a PUC Certificate Online?
For a new two-wheeler, PUCC is provided by the dealer. So, you are not required to apply for the same. But for the bike insurance renewal of a pollution certificate, you are required to take your two-wheeler to the nearest emission test centre and get it checked. You will then be given the PUCC once you pay the required fee.
The government of India has currently approved only authorized emission testing centres and RTOs where you can get a Pollution Under Control Certificate online on the Parivahan web portal. The portal offers several transport related services online starting from checking the PUC centre application centre, online fees payment, to the issuance of pollution certificates.

Now that you know how important it is to carry a valid PUC certificate with you when riding a two-wheeler, you must also be informed that on not doing so, you may be liable for prosecution under Section 190(2) as per the Motor Vehicles Act.
