Drink and Drive Fine in India
Drinking and driving can be an extremely dangerous activity. Know penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Drinking and driving can be an extremely dangerous activity, no matter the circumstances. Not only is it egregiously harmful to you, it can also be dangerous for other fellow drivers and passengers on the road who may be driving responsibly. It is thus an act that is punishable by law. The most recent legislation on this is the Motor Vehicle Act 2019, according to which it is illegal to drive under the influence in any sort of vehicle. Driving when under the influence is therefore a criminal offence.
Penalties for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
As it is a considerably serious offence, the penalties are similarly high to reflect that fact. Therefore, not only is it a moral responsibility to not drive when under the influence of alcohol, it is also a necessity in order to avoid financial hardship for yourself.
The penalties have also been recently increased as per the Motor Vehicle Act of 2019. Beforehand, the penalty for first offense used to be Rs. 2,000 with the risk of imprisonment for six months. However, with the new legislation, the penalty is now up to Rs. 10,000 alongside the risk of six months of imprisonment. Furthermore, with a second offense, the penalty used to be a fine of Rs. 3,000 with six months of imprisonment but now the fine has been increased up to Rs.15,000. Therefore it can be seen that even if you get extremely lucky and do not cause any injury or danger to anyone when driving drunk, you would be facing the risk not only of a huge financial burden but also of imprisonment, as it is a very serious criminal offence.
