We are living in India, where a woman is treated as a goddess! And the government of India never fails to launch initiatives that support women. 

Among them, one such maternity benefit scheme is Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), which supports pregnant women and newborn babies who belong to disadvantaged classes. 

In India, every third woman is undernourished, and every second woman is anaemic. (1) Because undernutrition is the biggest issue among the majority of Indian women, they almost give birth to low-weight babies. To fight this problem, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana was launched in 2017 to provide financial support to pregnant women and lactating mothers.

What Is Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a centrally sponsored flagship maternity scheme by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the government of India that came into effect on 1st January 2017. 

It provides maternity benefits to women who belong to socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society. 

Under PMMVY, eligible women receive a direct cash benefit of ₹5,000 in three instalments during pregnancy and after childbirth. Also, a cash incentive of ₹1,000 as per approved norms towards Maternity Benefits under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is also provided. In total, a woman gets ₹6,000/- on average.

Who is Eligible for PMMVY?

This scheme mainly aims to support women who belong to socially, economically disadvantaged, and marginalized sections of society. The criteria are:

  • The pregnant woman should be at least 19 years old.

  • The woman who is employed and experiencing wage losses due to the pregnancy.

  • Pregnant women can apply for the PMMVY within 270 days of childbirth.

  • If the applicant delivers twins, triplets or quadruplets in her second pregnancy, and among them, one or more children is a girl, the woman will receive a cash benefit as per the PMMVY 2.0 norms. (as explained below)

  • Women of scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST).

  • Women who are fully disabled (Divyang Jan) or partially (40%).

  • Women holders of BPL ration Card, e-Shram card, and MGNREGA Job Card. 

  • Women who are already beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY) under Ayushman Bharat.

  • Women farmers who are beneficiaries under Kisan Samman Nidhi. 

  • Women whose net family income is less than ₹ 8 Lakh per annum. 

  • Pregnant and Lactating AWWs/ AWHs/ ASHAs.

  • Women holding Ration Card under NFSA Act 2013

  • Any other category as may be prescribed by the Central Government

Exclusions of PMMVY 

The exclusions of the PMMVY scheme are:

  • The pregnant woman's husband’s Aadhaar number is not mandatory for availing the benefits under the Scheme.

  • All pregnant women and lactating mothers who are employees of the Central Government or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking and are getting similar benefits from their organizations are not eligible to get the benefits of the scheme. 

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

The cash benefits of ₹5000 for the first child are given in two instalments. Below is the detailed information on how these benefits will be dispersed. 

  • First Child:

Online Application Process of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

The online application process for the PMMVY is really simple. All you need to do is follow the below step-by-step guide. 

  • Visit the official website of the Ministry(2) and click on the “login” tab in the right corner. 

  • Enter the mobile number for verification.  

  • Enter the other details, such as name, State, District, Area, Block, Village, and relationship with the beneficiary. 

  • Then, click on the “Create account” button.  

  • Once the account is created, click on the “Login” tab on the website's main homepage.

  • Now, fill in the user ID, password, and captcha code. 

  • Then, apply for the PMMVY scheme.

  • After login, click on the "Data Entry" tab and choose the  "Beneficiary Registration" option.

  • Enter all the personal details on the Beneficiary registration page.

  • Then choose the suitable option under the Scheme applying for the First Child or Second Child.

  • Once all the details are filled in, click on the "Submit" button.
