Your car is your most adored treasure. It is very common to wish to personalize your car according to your desires. One of the most common things that people do to personalize the appearance of their car is customizing the font of the contents of the number plate. Although your car may look more appealing to you, it may have many drawbacks.

Why Is It Not Recommended To Have A Number Plate With Fancy Fonts?

Why Should You Not Have Fancy Number Plates?

According to the law, every car must have a clear and visible license number plate in the front and rear of the car. Having fancy fonts may make it difficult for police or the other authorities to read and recognize the vehicle. It is often considered to be fraudulent as this method is commonly adopted by people doing criminal acts to escape the surveillance system or being caught by the authorities. Having a clear license plate will keep your vehicle simple and clean appeal wise as well as legally owing to its recognizably clear clarity.

Therefore, having a fancy number plate that does not adhere to the specified format or is unclear for any reason can be held punishable and may result in heavy fines.

What Is The Legal Penalty For Using A Fancy License Plate?

Because of the above mentioned reasons, having a clear number plate that adheres to the specified format given by the government is crucial. Having a license plate with fancy fonts that are not clear or recognizable can result in legal penalties like heavy fines. According to section 51 and section 177 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act in India, the fine for having fancy fonts is Rs. 1,000. The fine for this also varies from region to region.

What Is The Prescribed Format For A Car License Plate?

The car’s license plate contains the car’s registration details. This is the main identification for your car. Therefore, the RTO (Road Transport Office) has prescribed a certain format for the license plate of the car and it depends on the type of the car too. The following are the specifications-

  1. Private vehicles are to have a plate with white background and black writing.
  2. Temporarily registered vehicles are supposed to have a yellow background with red writing.
  3. Vehicles used for commercial transportation are supposed to have yellow number plates with black writing.
  4. Rental cabs are to have yellow license plates with black writing.

How To Get A Number Plate When You Purchase A New Car?

When you purchase a new car, your car dealer might ask you to apply for a temporary registration number that is valid for a month. This temporary registration number is valid but you are still required to register your car for a permanent registration number.

Once you receive the number and documents of the car, you must purchase a number plate for both the back and front of your car. This plate must follow the guidelines prescribed by the RTO. It must be colored according to the category of your car.

If you still want to pick a customized font for your car, ensure that it is legible and clear even when observed from a distance.

Take Away

Customizing your car’s license plate may sound like a fun idea. But, consider the fact that you can be fined if the contents of  your license plate isn’t clear. Thus, it would be best to refrain from using fancy fonts on the number plate of your car or at least pick a font that is legible and clear.  Adhering to the laws will keep you on the safer side both legally and while driving.
