What Is a Vehicle Registration Certificate And How To Get It?

Be it a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler, having any of these brings a great sense of convenience. Isn’t it? Along with offering comfort, there come responsibilities along the way when you own a vehicle. For instance, you need to keep vehicle-related documents such as a vehicle registration certificate, chassis number details, and other important documents like a driving license. In this blog, we shall discuss what a vehicle registration certificate is and how you can get it.

What Is a Vehicle Registration Certificate And How To Get It?

What is a Vehicle Registration Certificate?

A vehicle registration certificate is one that indicates that your vehicle has been registered with the Regional Transport Office. Once your vehicle is registered, a vehicle registration certificate is issued which is commonly called the RC or Vehicle Registration Certificate. A vehicle registration certificate contains details such as:

  1. Vehicle Registration Number
  2. Vehicle registration date
  3. Vehicle chassis number
  4. Type of fuel used
  5. Model of the vehicle
  6. Date and month of the manufacture of the vehicle
  7. The expiry date of the registration certificate

How to Get a Vehicle Registration Certificate?

Here is how you can get a vehicle registration certificate in simple steps:

  • You need to first visit your nearest RTO or Regional Transport Office
  • To get the vehicle registration certificate issued, your vehicle will be inspected first by the RTO officer
  • Next, you need to fill out form 20 to complete your registration certificate
  • The RTO officer will also take the vehicle chassis number imprint
  • Next, you will have to submit the relevant documents such as aadhar card, PAN card, vehicle insurance copy, temporary registration issued by the motor dealer, etc.
  • Finally, pay the registration fees and then the vehicle registration certificate will be issued to you

Alternatively, you can also get vehicle registration from your vehicle dealer. This will save you time to go to the RTO and undergo the tedious registration process.

What If I Don’t Have A Vehicle Registration Certificate?

It is mandatory to have a vehicle registration certificate while driving on Indian roads. In case you are found riding in your vehicle without a valid vehicle registration certificate, then you will be fined. In case you violate this law for the first time, the fine will be Rs. 5000. If you are found violating this law for the second time, then the fine gets doubled and turns out to be Rs. 10,000. Thus, it is very important that you get your vehicle registration certificate issued as soon as you have bought a new vehicle.

Take Away

Thus, whenever you buy a new vehicle, make sure to visit your nearest RTO and get your vehicle registration certificate issued on priority.
