When driving on the road, knowing the traffic rules is very basic and important information. They keep everyone on the road protected. The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 which is one of the major acts dictating the traffic rules and regulations was amended significantly in 2019. There were 63 clauses that were amended in an attempt to further improve the driving practices of the country and help eliminate traffic violations in the country. New Structure for Traffic Rules

  • Driving without Licence

Having a driver’s licence is one of the most basic documents that you need to keep at hand when driving a car. Earlier the fine for driving without one was only Rs 500 but now it is Rs 5000.

  • Speed Limit

    Most roads in India have specific speed limits that are in place decided according to the traffic flow to keep everyone safe. Flouting the speed rule will also lead to heavy fines up to Rs 4000 depending on the vehicle in question.
  • Rash Driving

    It is also illegal to rash drive and try to race on the road as it leads to several accidents on a daily basis. The penalty for this has also been raised to Rs 1000-5000 and/or up to 1 year of imprisonment going up to Rs 10,000 in case of repeating offenders.
  • Drunk Driving

    Driving when under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicants is strictly forbidden as it puts the driver and all the passengers in the car also at risk. The fine for such offences has also been raised to Rs 10,000.
  • Taking More than One Pillion Rider

    This is a common problem in India, where two-wheelers pile on two and sometimes even three pillion riders. This can be extremely dangerous. Earlier the fine was Rs 2000 to Rs 20,000.
  • Driving Without Insurance

    Having car insurance is compulsory, and anyone caught without it can be fined Rs 2000 and/or imprisoned for up to 3 months. However, if the person is a repeated offender the fine will be higher.
  • Juvenile Traffic Offenders

    In case there is a case a juvenile found guilty of breaking the law the guardian or parent will be considered responsible. In such cases, they can be put behind bars for up to 3 years and fined Rs 25,000. Moreover, the RC will be cancelled for a year and the juvenile who broke the law will not be given a licence till they are 25.
  • Riding a Two-Wheeler Without a Helmet

    The fine for this is Rs 1000 and suspension of licence for 3 months.
  • Blocking an Ambulance

    If a driver does not give way to an ambulance they can be fined Rs. 10,000 for obstruction.
